Dessinateur, architecte, poète, écrivain, imprimeur, conférencier, peintre, designer textile et fabricant, William Morris (1834-1896) appartint à la Confrérie préraphaélite, sources du mouvement Arts & Crafts. Éditeur inspiré, il fut célèbre non seulement pour ses oeuvres littéraires mais aussi pour son engagement politique socialiste. Ses créations dans le domaine des arts décoratifs exercèrent une influence immense sur les arts du XXe siècle et sur la reconnaissance de l’artisanat d’art.
